Close-up of a Golden Eagle 11-29-10 Golden Eagle Update

Etsa, the Golden Eagle that came to the Wildlife Center in September, has slowly been gaining strength. She has been in our large flight enclosure, exercising. When she did not gain strength as quickly as expected, Lisa and Lou captured her for a second blood test. (Do not try this at home folks! It requires two highly experienced wildlife experts to quickly control her!)

The further testing indicated Etsa has both lead poisoning and West Nile. So, she has continued to be treated and is building her strength in the flight enclosure.

Rescued Golden Eagle in Tucson Wildlife Center's Rehab9-30-2010 Golden Eagle Rescued

Golden Eagle in rehab at the Tucson Wildlife Center

Can you believe this majestic, powerful Golden Eagle was so malnourished she was too weak to get off the ground?!

We believe she is a case of lead poisoning. Although lead shot is illegal, it is still used and becomes poisonous when ingested.

Since her arrival, she has had blood tests to determine the level of lead in her blood and is on a daily regimen to leach the lead from her system.

She has a courageous will to live and has gained strength and weight. The Center is optimistic that she will recover and be released to once again grace the skies of Southern Arizona.

We will give you updates on her progress.

Wilbur, a TWC education bobcat, held by Coach Stoops9-29-2010 Wilbur the Bobcat Visits the Wildcats

On the afternoon of September 29, 2010, our Wilbur visited the University of Arizona Wildcat football team. Yes, that is Coach Stoops holding Wilbur!University of Arizona Wildcat football players and the Tucson Wildlife Center's bobcat Wilbur

Wilbur visited the team to wish the Coach and team continued success. It was the first time in decades that a real wildcat visited the Wildcat football program. The team learned that a Bobcat like Wilbur really is a wild animal!

Wilbur is one of our licensed educational animals. He is a seven year old bobcat, rescued as a baby when the rest of his family died under the weight of a bulldozer. Wilbur has been doing very well with his daily medication for epilepsy.

Click here to see the KOLD video of Wilbur on that evening's news.
